Here are some essential details you should be aware of regarding Vietnam’s visa exemption program:
- No More 30-Day Gap: Since July 1, 2020, the 30-day gap requirement between two entries has been eliminated. Travelers from visa-exempt countries can now exit and re-enter Vietnam immediately without waiting for 30 days.
- British National Overseas (BNO) Passport Holders: BNO passport holders are not eligible for Vietnam’s visa exemption and must apply for a visa to visit Vietnam. See details here.
- Comprehensive Exemption: This program covers entry, exit, and transit, providing convenience for travelers.
- Counting Visa-Free Stay: The visa-free stay period is counted from the date of entry.

Other Vietnam visa exemption policy
- Vietnam 5-year visa: also known as Vietnam 5-year visa exemption certificate. This is issued for Vietnamese residing overseas or foreigners having family relationships with Vietnamese citizens and Vietnamese residing overseas. It is valid for up to 5 years, and allows its holders to travel back and forth to Vietnam during its validity.
- Phu Quoc visa exemption: The 30-day visa exemption is granted to those entering this coastal economic zones decided by the Government. The conditions to get Phu Quoc visa exemption are firstly you fly to Phu Quoc from an international location via Phu Quoc International Airport/Seaport, Phu Quoc is your final destination in Vietnam, and your next destination after Phu Quoc is any country other than mainland Vietnam.
- APEC Business Travel Card: ABTC holders with valid passports are exempted from Vietnam visa requirements for a stay of no longer than 60 days.
Eligibility criteria for Vietnam visa exemption
To benefit from Vietnam’s visa exemption, eligible travelers must meet the following criteria:
- Passport Validity: Ensure that your passport remains valid for at least 06 months beyond your arrival date in Vietnam.
- Blank Pages: Your passport should have at least 02 blank pages for visa stamping.
Vietnam visa exemption extension
While the Vietnam visa exemption could be extended in the past, it is no longer possible due to the current circumstances. Travelers seeking a longer stay in Vietnam have two options:
- Visa Run: Enter Vietnam with visa exemption, leave the country for a neighboring nation (such as Thailand, Cambodia, or Laos) when the exemption duration ends, and return with a new visa exemption. This method is commonly known as a “Visa Run.”
- Apply for a 3-Month Vietnam E-Visa: Obtain a 3-month e-visa to extend your stay in the country.
