How to avoid 8 common mistakes when applying for Vietnam eVisa

Since its first introduction by Vietnam Immigration Department in 2017, Vietnam eVisa, or Vietnam electronic visa is known as a revolutionary online visa solution. It now is the kind of visa preferred by almost all travelers to Vietnam thanks to its convenience, cost-saving, and long validity of up to 90 days with simplified application and issuance processes.

Foreigners can apply for a Vietnam eVisa via online official website of the Department by themselves, and the process to complete the application form often takes just a few minutes. However, carelessness and some mistakes that are not paid attention to may lead to the refusal of the Vietnam visa issuance. This is not only a waste of money (visa fee is not refundable no matter your Vietnam eVisa application is approved or not) but also ruin your planned trip to Vietnam.

In this post, VME – an expert in providing Vietnam visa/ eVisa services for more than 10years, will share with you 8 common mistakes when applying for Vietnam eVisa made by thousands of applicants who then contacted us for solutions.

8 common mistakes when applying for Vietnam eVisa

1. Unqualified passport photo and portrait photo

You may not notice but this is the most common mistake that makes your Vietnam eVisa application stuck in the government system for a long time.

Before applying for a Vietnam e-visa, the applicants should prepare a passport photo and a recently taken portrait photo.

The qualified passport photo and portrait:

  • Should be clear, having a size of less than 2MB in JPG or PNG format;
  • The portrait must be in good quality, taken within recent 6 months, in plain background (white background), no glasses, no tank top, facing toward the camera;
  • The passport bio page photo (information page) must be in good quality, full page shown including the full ICAO LINES (the bottom lines of the page);

👉 Special notes:

  • Don’t crop the image from your passport page as it will not be accepted.
  • Make sure to upload the portrait photo to the first field, the passport data page photo to the second field, don’t reverse the order.

2. Providing incorrect personal information

You are confident that you are filling your own information without mistake, unfortunately, we typed the wrong numbers or characteristics sometimes. Therefore, unintentionally providing incorrect personal information is one of the common mistakes people make when applying for a Vietnam eVisa.

Some common mistakes during filling information can be:

  • Last name and Surname: should match the ICAO line, and contain no special characters.
  • Date of birth
  • Passport number: some fill the letter O instead of number 0, or do not fill the whole passport number appearing on the passport
  • Passport issue date
  • Passport expiry date

Although those fields are automatically filled out based on your uploaded passport, you are highly recommended to recheck them to make sure every detail is correct order, spelling, and format:

👉 Special notes:

  • All date fields must be in DD/MM/YYYY, not mm/dd/yyyy format.
  • Visa issued with WRONG details will result in NO entry accepted.

3. Faking residential address in Vietnam

Some may think of faking residential address in Vietnam. However, Vietnam Immigration Department will check with your Vietnam accommodation host (hotel) to see if you have booked it or not. Therefore, providing wrong address or faking declaration might result in Vietnam visa refusal.

4. Misunderstanding of Vietnam visa validity

In fact, Vietnam e-visa comes into force from the arrival date you filled in the Vietnam visa application form.

It means you can’t come to Vietnam before that date but only ON or AFTER the provided arrival date. Moreover, if you come to Vietnam when the visa is coming closer to its expiry date, your stay in Vietnam will be shortened. So just plan your trip carefully and should not delay entry for too long.

5. Applying for Vietnam eVisa when you are in Vietnam

Many visitors submit their Vietnam e-Visa application when they are in Vietnam expecting for a new stay in Vietnam while doing the visa run, but most applications are refused. Therefore, make sure that you submit Vietnam eVisa application when you are outside Vietnam (you are not in Vietnam).

You can also consider our Emergency/Urgent Vietnam eVisa to get the it approved within a short period of time so you don’t need to do a visa run in days and come back to Vietnam as soon as possible.

6. Forget apply for your children when they have their own passport

If your children’s name is included in your passport, you can check the item “Under 14 years old accompanying child(ren) included in your passport (if any)” when filling in the Vietnam e-visa application form.

In case your children have their own passports, they must have a separate Vietnam visa like the adults, and filling a separate application form.

If your children’s names don’t appear on parent passports, and you add the children’s name on the same visa application with you, when the Vietnam visa is issued, the name of children will be listed on the parent’s visa, but ìn fact they are not. It means your children have no visa and they won’t be allowed to get on the plane.

7. Vietnam eVisa application online status tracking

Applicants often think that they have filled all the fields in the Vietnam eVisa application form and have nothing to do with it until the visa is issued so they don’t check the visa status regularly. However, please remember that sometimes the Vietnam Immigration Deparment’s request you to add details to the form. If you don’t track the status, late response to the request may lead to delays in visa processing and even ruining the trip due to no visa issued on time, or even Vietnam visa refusal.

When the process is done, the result will not be automatically sent to your registered email. Instead, you should go to the website of the Vietnam Immigration Department to manually check if your Vietnam e-Visa application is approved or not, or if there is any more special request.

For checking result, please go to https://vietnamvisaservice.net/check-vietnam-evisa-status/.

Many visitors due to filling wrong information in the application form, or due to other unexpected reasons, the Vietnam visa they got show the wrong details, as a result, they can’t get on the plane. So, when downloading your Vietnam e-visa from the website, make sure that you double check all the information because if there is any mistake, you still have time to apply for a new one and change flight as soon as possible. The fee for applying Vietnam visa may be higher but, it will surely cost less than being denied at the airport on your departure day.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, you don't have to enter Vietnam exactly on the arrival date listed on your Vietnam eVisa. Your Vietnam eVisa is valid from the start date to the end date clearly stated in the approval document. You can enter Vietnam at any time within this period. Example: If your Vietnam eVisa validity is from 1 May 2025 to 1 June 2025 (single entry), you can enter Vietnam anytime starting from 1 May 2025. However, you cannot enter before 1 May, and you must leave Vietnam on or before 1 June 2025.
Yes, you can. Vietnam eVisa holders can enter and exit through international checkpoints approved by the Vietnamese Government for eVisa use. As of 2026, there are 83 approved eVisa checkpoints, including airports, land border gates, and seaports. When applying, you are asked to provide your intended entry and exit checkpoints. If your travel plans later change, make sure the new airport, land border, or seaport is on the current approved eVisa checkpoint list before you travel. For example, if you originally selected Hanoi Airport (HAN) but later change your flight to Ho Chi Minh City Airport (SGN), that is perfectly fine as both are approved eVisa entry points. If you are unsure, contact us before departure. Note: make sure you enter within the validity dates shown on your Vietnam eVisa.
All personal details on your Vietnam eVisa must exactly match the information in your passport. Even a small error, such as a single incorrect letter or number, will render your visa invalid. In such cases, immigration officers may deny you entry into Vietnam. Unfortunately, Vietnam eVisas cannot be corrected or amended once issued. If there is any incorrect information on your Vietnam eVisa, you will need to apply for a new visa. We strongly recommend double-checking all your details before submission to avoid delays or complications.
It is advisable to initiate your Vietnamese eVisa application at least two weeks before your intended travel date to ensure a smooth and timely process.
For eligible cases, we may be able to support emergency processing in as fast as 2 working hours, subject to document readiness and case eligibility. Please contact us immediately via WhatsApp for the fastest assistance.
